New Wazzu head football coach Paul Wulff was noted for his team's offensive prowess while he was the chief at Eastern Washington University, but it was the Cougar defense which ruled the day in his first spring football scrimmage at the helm of WSU. The Cougar offense was only able to muster two rushing touchdowns - both from junior Chris Ivory - during the 90-minute scrimmage.
Gary Rogers, who will be a senior in autumn, enters the spring as the Cougs' #1 quarterback and as such, took the majority of snaps in the initial scrimmage, finishing 9-of-21 for 98 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Kevin Lopina finished 3-of-5 for 38 yards with one interception while Marshall Lobbestael was 3-of-5 for 53 yards. Redshirt freshman Logwone Mitz led all rushers with 44 yards - but had the single longest rush of the day on a 46-yard run.
Defensively, the Cougars recorded two interceptions - one by redshirt freshman linebacker Marshal Pirtz and the other by sophomore defensive back Romeo Pellum. The Cougar defense also recorded four sacks - one each by defensive linemen Andy Mattingly and Bob Hilgert and Adam Hineline as well as one by linebacker Cory Evans.
