A staple of the annual spring game has been the announcement of the coming season's captains. Head coach Randy Edsall announced the selection of four captains Saturday. A brief look at those selected:
Defensive end Cody Brown, one of the more humble and modest members of the team, will be a first-year captain in 2008. A 6-foot-3, 248-pound senior, Brown started all 13 games in 2007 and had 50 total tackles - including 16.5 for a loss.
Cornerback Darius Butler returns as a captain for the 2008 season after proving an effective leader for the defensive backs on and off the field in 2007. Butler, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound athlete, has started all but one game in the past three years, recording a career-high 54 tackles last fall while intercepting two passes.
Wide receiver D.J. Hernandez has seen it all in his four years with the Huskies - position changes, wins, losses, you name it. That makes the 6-foot-1, 202-pound senior a no-brainer for a second go-around as a captain. In his first year as a receiver, Hernandez caught 30 passes for a total of 404 yards and two touchdowns, proving to be one of the toughest wideouts on the field last fall.
Quarterback Tyler Lorenzen is the unquestioned leader of the offense on the field. It's no surprise, then, that he was named a leader off of it. Lorenzen, a 6-foot-5, 226-pound senior, led the Huskies to their second bowl berth in 2007 and turned a dismal 4-8 season in 2006 into a 9-4 record and a Big East championship. Lorenzen, who started all 13 games in the fall, completed 197-of-347 passes for 2,367 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions.
