Berwick WR Kenan Jones commits to LSU

Class of 2018 wide receiver Kenan Jones plays football, not the waiting game.

So when the opportunity arose on Saturday to make his college destination known, he eagerly announced a verbal commitment to LSU.

“If I could start there tomorrow, I would start there tomorrow,” Jones told TigerBait.com. “I’m ready to go.”

The 6-3, 200-pounder from Berwick (La.) took an unofficial visit to LSU on Saturday, along with his mother and aunt.

“I’ve been thinking about it with my family,” Jones said. “I took the visit today and it felt like the right place.”

While on LSU’s campus, he was able to tell Ed Orgeron face to face about his decision, which got the head coach’s trademark response.

“Oh yeah,” he said with a laugh. “There was a lot of hugging.”

LSU offered Jones last summer after his strong camp showing. With LSU putting the finishing touches on its Class of 2017, Jones wanted to claim his spot in the next recruiting class.

“I felt like I needed to make up my mind heading into my senior year,” Jones said.

Jones is looking forwarding to joining LSU’s evolving offense with new coordinator Matt Canada.

“It should be good,” Jones said. “Moving forward we’re going to be good. I’m ready to get there and start.”

Jones said he spoke briefly with Canada and looks forward to expanding their relationship.

“He’s a cool dude,” Jones said. “We didn’t get to talk for a long time but I get cool vibe from him. Everything should be good.”

The opportunity to remain close to home was another selling point.

“Everything was going to be a factor,” he said. “But it’s nice that I’ll be close to home and everybody can come watch me.”

Jones earned Class 3A All-State honors as a junior season at Berwick, but responded humbly when asked if he knew his receiving statistics.

“I was All-State but I don’t know any of my stats,” he said. “I don’t keep up with stuff like that, to be honest. We throw the ball a lot.”

According to his prep team’s statistics page, Jones caught 49 passes for 932 yards and seven touchdowns through 10 games. Berwick finished 8-3 overall and reached the playoffs for the first time since 1996.
