Rewind: LSU 10, Arkansas 8

LSU scored five ninth-inning runs and Hunter Newman struck out Luke Bonfield with the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the inning as the Tigers rallied from a seven-run deficit to beat Arkansas 10-8 in a Southeastern Conference game at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville on Saturday night.

HOW THEY SCORED

Arkansas first inning – Jake Arledge walked and Chad Spanberger singled. Arledge scored on a single by Luke Bonfield. Spanberger advanced to third base and Bonfield went to second base on a ground out to the pitcher by Grant Koch. Spanberger scored on a sacrifice fly to the rightfielder by Dominic Fletcher. LSU second inning – Jordan Romero hit a leadoff home run over the leftfield fence. ARKANSAS 2, LSU 1

Arkansas second inning – With two out, Jax Biggers singled and stole second base. After Arledge singled, Spanberger hit a three-run homer over the rightfield fence. ARKANSAS 5, LSU 1

Arkansas third inning – Koch hit a leadoff home run over the leftfield fence. ARKANSAS 6, LSU 1

Arkansas fourth inning – With one out, Biggers singled and Arledge walked. Biggers scored on a single by Spanberger. ARKANSAS 7, LSU 1

Arkansas fifth inning – With two out, Eric Cole singled. Biggers and Arledge walked to load the bases. Cole scored on a walk to Spanberger. ARKANSAS 8, LSU 1

LSU seventh inning – With one out, Romero singled. After Zach Watson fouled out to the rightfielder, Romero scored on a double by Josh Smith. ARKANSAS 8, LSU 2

LSU eighth inning – Nick Coomes doubled and went to third on a wild pitch by Kevin Kopps. Antoine Duplantis walked. Coomes scored and Duplantis was forced at second base on a ground ball to the shortstop by Cole Freeman. After Kramer Robertson popped out to the first baseman, Greg Deichmann hit a two-run homer over the rightfield fence. ARKANSAS 8, LSU 5

LSU ninth inning – With one out, Smith was hit by a pitch. Smith went to second on defensive indifference. Pinch-hitter Chris Reid walked and Coomes singled to load the bases. After Duplantis struck out, Smith scored when Freeman was hit by a pitch. Pinch-runner Brennan Breaux scored, Coomes advanced to third and Freeman moved to second on a wild pitch by Cannon Chadwick. Coomes and Freeman scored on a throwing error by the shortstop Biggers on Robertson’s ground ball. Robertson, who went to second on the error, scored on a single by Deichmann. LSU 10, ARKANSAS 8

KEY STRETCH OF GAME

The Tigers won the game with a five-run ninth inning outburst in which they had one hit go past the infield. Two hit batters, a single by Coomes, a walk and a wild pitch produced the first two runs which left LSU behind 8-7. With two out, Robertson hit a ground ball to the shortstop Biggers, whose throw to first base was wild enabling the tying and go-ahead runs to score.

Arkansas outhit LSU 12-9. The Tigers had four extra base hits – two doubles and two home runs. . .LSU stranded only four runners – three in scoring position. The Tigers were 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. . .The Razorbacks left 13 runners on base – eight in scoring positon. Arkansas left the bases loaded in three innings, including the ninth.

LSU’S PLAYER OF THE GAME

Getting an opportunity to be the designated hitter, Romero went 2-for-5. He hit a solo homer in the second which left the Tigers behind 2-1. In the seventh, Romero singled and came around to score on a two-out double by Smith. Romero was not involved in the eighth or ninth-inning rallies.

Romero was inserted in the fifth spot in the lineup as the designated hitter. . .Deichmann’s home run was his tenth of the season. In 2016, Deichmann hit his tenth homer in the regional tournament against Rice. . .Watson’s single in the second inning gave him a six-game hitting streak. . .Both Duplantis and Robertson were 0-for-4. Duplantis struck out with the bases loaded in the ninth. . .Stephan was in complete control on the mound. LSU had just three runners reach second base against Stephan. Romero hit a homer for the first run and scored from first base on Smith’s double for the second run. . .Razorbacks relievers Kopps and Chadwick gave up eight runs over the last two innings. Kopps yielded the three runs in the eighth, while Chadwick was charged with the five ninth-inning runs. . .Poche, who was roughed up in his start at Florida, had a poorer outing against the Razorbacks. Poche pitched to 20 Arkansas hitters with 11 reaching safely – nine hits and two walks. . .Poche has not lasted four innings in three of his four career starts against the Razorbacks. Newman then struck out Bonfield to record his third save of the year. . .The last time the Tigers overcame a three-run ninth-inning deficit to win was 1991. LSU trailed Ole Miss 3-0 after eight innings and won 7-3. . .LSU is 21-11 overall, 6-5 in the SEC. The Tigers are in fourth place in the Western Division – two games behind co-leaders Arkansas and Auburn. . .
