LSU’S PLAYER OF THE GAME

Hess bounced back from a poor start last Wednesday at McNeese with a strong performance. Hess permitted one batter to reach base during his season-high six innings. Hess set down the first 17 batters before Griffith reached on an infield single. Griffith hit a slow ground ball just past Hess. Hess wild pitched Griffith to second base before retiring Ashton Martin on a fly ball to rightfield. Hess struck out a season-high seven batters. Hess allowed three runs in 2.2 innings against McNeese.

Hess’ comments: “The biggest adjustment I made tonight was I tried to slow a lot of things down. I slowed my wind-up down. Last week, I was rushing home and getting out ahead of myself. I don’t think my stuff was explosive. I hit my spots, mixed up speeds and threw three pitches for strikes.”

Watson started in centerfield for the third straight game. . .Duplantis extended his hitting streak to nine games with a three-run double in the seventh. . .LSU starting pitchers have not allowed a run in the last four games. The actual crowd was a little less than 3,000. . .Todd Peterson will be the starting pitcher against UNO on Wednesday.

FROM THE LOCKER ROOM

Coach Paul Mainieri’s comments: “The guys came out with a purpose tonight. We had several clutch hits when the game was still close. Zack Hess threw the ball great. I only hooked him after six innings because he will be needed out of the bullpen this weekend against Georgia. He will probably not be available until Sunday. After his bad start last week, all he had to do was look around and see the example set by our guys. Alex Lange had a rough outing and then pitched a gem. I’m sure Zack saw the way Lange rebounded.”

UP NEXT

LSU will play host to UNO at The Box on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Central. The Privateers (9-7) lost three games to Southeastern Louisiana last weekend. UNO defeated the Tigers 11-8 last month in New Orleans. The LSU-UNO game will be available on the SEC Digital Network.
