Rewind: UNO 7, LSU 4

UNO pushed across three runs in the top of the 15th inning to defeat LSU 7-4 in a non-conference game at The Box on Wednesday night.

HOW THEY SCORED

UNO first inning – With one out, Samuel Capielano singled and moved to second on a throwing error by shortstop Kramer Robertson. Capielano advanced to third on a ground out to the first baseman by Dakota Dean and scored on a double by Tristan Clarke. UNO 1, LSU 0

LSU first inning – Robertson walked. Cole Freeman struck out and Robertson stole second base. After Antoine Duplantis flied out to the leftfielder, Greg Deichmann walked. Jake Slaughter hit a three-run homer over the leftfield fence. LSU 3, UNO 1

UNO fifth inning – With two out, Capielano singled. Capielano stole second base and went to third base on a wild pitch by Hunter Kiel. Capielano scored on Dean’s double. Dean advanced to third base and scored on two wild pitches by Kiel. UNO 3, LSU 3

UNO 11th inning – With one out, Dakota Phillips singled. Pinch-runner Jared McKay stole second base and scored on a single by Owen Magee. UNO 4, LSU 3

LSU 11th inning – With one out, pinch-hitter Beau Jordan singled. After Robertson struck out, Freeman singled. Pinch-runner Brennan Breaux scored on a single by Duplantis. UNO 4, LSU 4

UNO 15th inning – Dean doubled and went to third base on a sacrifice bunt by pinch-hitter Jay Robinson. Dean scored on John Cable’s ground ball to the second baseman. Cable advanced to second on a bad throw to the plate by Freeman. After Chase Crump was intentionally walked, McKay struck out. Cable scored on Magee’s single. Magee moved to second base on a wild pitch by Blair Frederick. Orynn Veillon walked to load the bases. Crump scored on a walk to Aaron Palmer. UNO 7, LSU 4

KEY STRETCH OF GAME

Dean, who had 12 hits prior to the game, opened the 15th inning with a double. That hit was his third of the game. After moving over to third base on a sacrifice bunt, Dean tried to score on Cable’s sharply-hit ground ball to Freeman at second base. Freeman made a good stop, but Nick Coomes was unable to dig out the low throw to the plate. The Privateers would add on two more runs on a RBI single by Magee and a bases-loaded walk to Palmer. Dean began his career at LSU. He is the younger brother of former Tigers first baseman Blake Dean, who is now the UNO coach.

UNO out hit LSU 13-10. All but one of the Tigers’ hits were singles. The Privateers had four doubles. . .LSU committed a season-high four errors – three in the first two innings. . .Tigers pitchers walked six and struck out 13. UNO pitchers walked 10 and struck out 12. . .LSU stranded 15 runners – nine in scoring position. The Tigers were 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position. . .The top four batters in the LSU lineup were a combined 3-for-25.

LSU’S PLAYER OF THE GAME

Even though he was the losing pitcher, Collin Strall gave LSU four solid innings out of the bullpen. Strall allowed a run in the 11th and then threw three scoreless innings. Strall gave up one run in the 15th. He was lifted with two outs in the inning. Blair Frederick, who made his first appearance of the year, permitted two inherited runners to score.

NOTES

Michael Papierski was back in the lineup at catcher. Bryce Adams was the designated hitter. Watson started in centerfield for the fourth straight game. . .Robertson nearly won the game in the bottom of the ninth, but the centerfielder Veillon made a diving catch on his fly ball with the winning run on third base and two out. . .The Tigers had the bases loaded and one out in the tenth. But, LSU did not end the game as Watson struck out and Josh Smith flied out. . .Duplantis extended his hitting streak to ten games with his game-tying single in the bottom of the 11th. . .Peterson was semi-effective in his two innings. He faced 10 batters with five reaching base. However, two of those hitters were safe due to errors. He allowed a two-out RBI by Clarke in the first. Peterson escaped trouble in the second by getting a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play with the bases loaded. . .Austin Bain turned in an impressive two-inning stint. After allowing a double to Capielano to start the third, Bain retired six batters in a row – three by strikeout. . .Hunter Kiel fell further down the pitching staff with one inning in which he gave up two two-out hits and threw three wild pitches. . .Matthew Beck, who made only his third appearance of the year, did not allow a run in 2.1 innings. He gave up one hit, walked one and struck out two. . .Russell Reynolds walked one and gave up two hits in the ninth. A line drive to the third baseman Smith turned into a double play after the leadoff walk. Caleb Gilbert retired Capielano on a ground ball with two runners on base and two out in the ninth. . .Hunter Newman was unavailable due to an undisclosed injury. It is not known when Newman will be able to pitch. . .UNO swept LSU in the regular season for the first time since 1997. The Privateers won two of three games from the Tigers in the 2008 regular season. . .LSU is now 13-5, while UNO is 10-7. . .The 15-inning game was the longest home game in LSU history. The Tigers have played two 16-inning games – both on the road. . .The paid attendance was 10,009. . .Alex Lange will be the starting pitcher against Georgia on Friday.

LSU will play host to Georgia in the opener of the first Southeastern Conference series of the season at The Box on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central. The Bulldogs (8-10) closed their pre-SEC schedule with an 8-7 come-from-behind victory against Presbyterian in Athens on Wednesday afternoon.
