UNO defeats LSU, 11-8

Owen Magee had a two-run double and a two-run single as UNO rallied from a five-run deficit to defeat LSU 11-8 at First NBC Ballpark in New Orleans on Tuesday night.

HOW THEY SCORED

LSU second inning – With two out, Bryce Adams hit a home run over the rightfield fence. Brennan Breaux hit a home run over the rightfield fence. LSU 2, UNO 0

LSU third inning – Antoine Duplantis doubled and moved to third on a ground out to the pitcher by Kramer Robertson. Duplantis scored on a sacrifice fly to the leftfielder by Greg Deichmann. LSU 3, UNO 0

UNO third inning – With two out, Aaron Palmer tripled. Palmer scored on a single by Dakota Dean. LSU 3, UNO 1

LSU fourth inning – Josh Smith walked and went to third on a single by Nick Coomes, who advanced to second on the throw to third base. Smith scored on a sacrifice fly to the centerfielder by Adams. Coomes scored on a single by Breaux. LSU 5, UNO 1

LSU fifth inning – Robertson hit a solo home run over the leftfield fence. LSU 6, UNO 1

UNO fifth inning – Sam Capielano tripled and scored on Palmer’s ground out to the shortstop. After Dean struck out, Tristan Clarke doubled. Clarke scored on a double by Hezekiah Randolph. After John Cable walked, Randolph scored on a double by Orynn Veillon. Dakota Phillips walked to load the bases. Cable and Veillon scored on a double by Magee. UNO sixth inning – With one out, Clarke hit a home run over the rightfield fence. Randolph walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Russell Reynolds and moved to third on a single by Cable. LSU eighth inning – With one out, Adams doubled. After Breaux struck out, Adams scored when the shortstop Palmer made an error on Freeman’s ground ball. UNO 11, LSU 7

LSU ninth inning – Robertson doubled and advanced to third on Deichmann’s ground out to the second baseman. Robertson scored on a single by Jake Slaughter. UNO 11, LSU 8

KEY STRETCH OF GAME

UNO jumped on LSU relief pitchers Hunter Kiel and Collin Strall for six runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Privateers had four two-out run-scoring hits. A two-run double by Magee tied the score at 6-6. A single by Capielano gave UNO the lead for good at 7-6.

KEY TEAM STATISTICS

LSU had 13 hits, while UNO had 14 hits. The Tigers had six extra-base hits – three doubles and three home runs. The Privateers had seven extra-base hits – four doubles, two triples and one home run. . .UNO committed two errors, but recorded three double plays. . .LSU stranded eight runners – four in scoring position. The Tigers were 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

LSU’S PLAYER OF THE GAME

One positive for the Tigers was the hitting of Duplantis, who ended an 0-for-12 slump with two singles and a double. Duplantis had singles in the first and seventh innings. He had a leadoff double in the third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Deichmann.

NOTES

Coomes got his first start of the season at catcher. Breaux started in leftfield. . .After Gilbert gave LSU four solid innings, the bullpen was a mess. Kiel got two outs, but allowed three extra-base hits and a walk. Strall yielded three run-scoring hits and did not record an out. Russell Reynolds, who got the last out in the fifth, was charged with four runs and three hits in the sixth. Doug Norman allowed a two-run single by Magee in the sixth. . .There were three innings in which the Tigers failed to deliver a big hit with multiple runners on base. Slaughter flied out with two runs on base and two out in the first. Smith flied out with the bases loaded and two out in the seventh. Coomes hit into a game-ending double play with two runners on base in the ninth. . .Three UNO relief pitchers gave up four runs in six innings. . .LSU is 3-1, while UNO is 4-0. The Privateers ended an eight-game losing streak to the Tigers. UNO’s last victory against LSU came during the 2010 season. . .The paid attendance was 2,421. . .Zack Hess will be the starting pitcher for LSU against Hofstra on Wednesday.
