My father was born and raised in Covington, LA. My mother, Patterson, LA with a graduating class of 5! I was born in Corpus Christi, TX but we moved to Franklin while I was still in grade school. I remember listening to LSU football games on WWL in Corpus Christi at night we picked up WWL clearly. I was hooked on the Tigahs from birth but I became a fanatic when my dad and I listened to Billy Cannon run that punt back against Ole Miss on Halloween night in 1959 and for the Tigahs to win the national championship.
I played high school football my freshman year but blew out my knee in spring ball that year. I went to live with my aunt and uncle in Harahan and enrolled in Rummell in Meterie. My aunt taught 30 years at St. Martins. Rummell is an excellent school compared to the public schools in LA especially in the 1960's My cousins both went to St. Martins but we could not come close to the tuition at St. Martins. The tuition at St. Martins was very close to the tuition for Tulane!
My uncle and my father had season tickets for the Tigahs! Night games started at 7 in Baton Rouge. We would usually be on Airline Highway by 1:30 -2:00. There was a place we always ate po boys and picked up a bucket of chicken to go. I was 11 years old when I went to Death Valley for the very first time.
