and we'll beat you guys next year in Oxford. As an Ole Miss fan I couldn't help from having that sinking feeling thinking of Billy Cannon when Odell took it 89 yards for the TD.

No you won't win in Oxford.  As to a rivarly..only for your side, as most of us could care less about Ole Miss.  While the Rebs/Black Bears certainly seem to get up to play us...few LSU fans view Ole Miss as anything but another Vandy or MSU.  To be a true rival..you have to matter, and sadly Ole Miss hasn't mattered in the SEC since the early 1960's.  That is why LSU/Tulane and LSU/Ole Miss aren't real rivalries anymore.  LSU's biggest rival will probably be A&M.

2-3 against th tigers since 08.

What's LSU record against bama in that time.

Who's a rival?

I am not arguing for who is a rival or not.  That is up to each fan to decide and frankly I could not care less what others think regarding a football rivarly. That being said, I have to point out that over the years I have noticed that 87 is one of the first ones to pipe up on any thread related to Ole Miss lol.  I think he protests too much. lol

I wish my LSU friends did not think it was a rivalry.  My phone has been getting lit up with Billy Cannon videos and "Geaux to Hell Ole Miss!" banners.  But, my friends are all over 35 too.

Good game LSU.  You made the plays when you had too and won a hard fought game.  I hope our team can learn from this one (and Vandy and Texas A&M) and finish like you guys in the future.  Till next year.

GoldenReb:

I have had my disagreements with 87 on our premium board but he is correct, For LSU fans my Fathers age [he is 69], the Ole Miss game is still a rivalry. For folks like me, I am 46, it sort of has that hybrid feel in that my first LSU game was the 1970 LSU-Ole Miss game. Working in and around campus here at LSU, for fans under the age of 35-40, Ole Miss is not a rivalry. For fans between 40 and 50, it sort of depends, Florida, Auburn and Bama all have been viewed as rivalries the last 10-12 years and for LSU fans at this moment, Bama is not the rivalry, it is about beating Saban.

So if you do a poll of LSU fans from say age 10 to 80, you will not get a clear majority of fans stating who is LSU's rivalry. You will get about 5 teams with 18% to 22% each.

My question to the Ole Miss fans that frequent here is why is it so important for the entire LSU fan base to view Ole Miss as a rivalry. I don't see that happening. For some LSU fans, it will be, particularly for those LSU fans who have Uncles, Fathers, Grandfathers, etc who were part of the Vaught-Dietzel/Mac era and have sort of passed down the LSU-Ole Miss rivlarly feelings but for the last generation or so of LSU fans, that is not the case.

Warrior Web,
What was Ole Miss record against LSU from 2002 -2007? Yeah, that's what I thought so stfu. 87 is right, Ole Miss is basically an afterthought now as far as a rivalry game and it probably won't change anytime soon. Again, when was the last time you won the SEC??? I'll hang up and listen.

Good Morning,

I have no beef with 87 and did not mean to offend him at all.  But in all seriousness, he will post on any thread with Ole Miss referenced.

To answer your question, I cannot speak for the Ole Miss fans you mention.  I honestly can only speak for me, but based on my observations I will say most Ole Miss fans do not care how LSU feels about it.  Maybe the ones that hang out on your board a lot need some sort of validation, but they are by far the minority.

For various reasons many of us consider LSU our rival.  For one, it is just a fun game to win.  Also, no matter how good LSU is, we have just never felt intimitated by LSU so we know we have a chance.  It is not like Bama where we just know we are going to lose (and Vandy lately lol). LSU is going to be a fun game where anything can happen.  Plus, I always associated it with Halloween growing up.  It was just fun.

For a while, Auburn was the team I wanted Ole Miss to beat the most due to Tubbs.  Then, honestly for a few years it was Arkansas due to SOME (not all but some) of their fans obessision with Nutt.  This year for me it MSU.  I really do not want to lose to those guys again.

I used to say there is no team I like beating more that LSU and there is no team I hate losing to more that State.  THat is most years but subject to change.  I think a lot of Ole Miss fans would agree.

GoldenReb,

I agree with just about everything you said. I agree with Ole Miss not being intimidated when they play LSU. I think Ole Miss fans despise everything about Louisiana along with LSU. This is what fuels the "rivalry" on Ole Miss end. I know for a fact that my friends (age group 30+) want to beat LSU more badly then State or anyone else for that matter. I just think the basis for their hatred is unjustified. I don't know, maybe we treat Ole Miss fans worse then others. I guess if that's true then maybe we do consider it a rivalry game!

Well, to some extent, but a lot of Mississippians love the Saints and frequent New Orleans.  I will tell you that some resentment grew during Katrina when MS got plowed over to but you never heard anything about it in the press.  But that has mostly passed.  From my personal experience, I realized we were more alike than not.  Having lived in Vicksburg and South MS I had a lot of friends from LA.  I mean some of my best friends.  There are times I like to pick on LA, but I realize pretty much any insult I hurl towards LA, could be hurled right back at me with regards to MS.

GoldenReb:

Ok, very good presentation on why Ole Miss fans consider LSU a rival game and how it is viewed relative to Miss. State, which I always thought was your true rival game. And Like I said, for some of the LSU fans my Father and Uncles age [late 60's early 70's], the Ole Miss game is still viewed as an LSU rival game, i..e The Vaught-Dietzel/Mac games and tough losses still sting for that generation of LSU fans.

Not offended Golden...have just had these arguments over and over too many times (especially on the other site with VampireReb..who lives in the past). and basically am tired of being told that OM is our #1 rival by OM fans.  As JK says below...most LSU fans that graduated after Archie Manning finished at OM view Ole Miss as just another SEC game we have to play....like MSU, UK, Vandy, Arky, SC.  Not bashing OM, but it is what it is.  Even my father, who graduated in 1958, when the rivalry was in full swing, doesn't view Ole Miss the same as he did in 1970!
11/27 2:08 PM | IP: Logged
Well..since 2008..Vandy is 4-1 vs OM and MSU is 3-2...does that make them more of a rival??  Also given that over the last 10 years VU is 6-4 vs OM and MSU is 5-5..while LSU is 8-2....not sure your argument holds much water.

Also, since Vaught retired in 1970 (not counting his short 1973 stint)..LSU has beaten Ole Miss (.679) at an equal clip to what Ole Miss has beaten Vandy (.691) and better than Ole Miss has beaten State (.619).

Well I'm 71 and Ole Miss was our rival back in the late 50's through I'd say the mid 70's.  Not so much on LSU's side since then.  I've always thought southern Mississippi ans southern Louisiana should be Louisiana and the northern parts Mississippi.
