Egg Bowl preview

Mississippi State will have one final opportunity to extend its season.

The Bulldogs are one win shy of bowl eligibility and standing in the way of the postseason is their instate archrival Ole Miss. The two Magnolia State schools will meet for the 108th time in the Egg Bowl at 6 p.m.

The Rebels have the advantage in the series 60-41-6 and also have the lead in Starkville 20-12-3. Since the rivalry has moved back to on-campus sites in 1991 MSU holds a slight 11-9 lead having won the last two meetings. The Bulldogs have not won the Golden Egg Trophy three consecutive years since winning four straight from 1939-42.

State claimed last year's game in Oxford with a 31-23 victory. The Bulldogs built a 31-9 lead in the game until Ole Miss added two fourth quarter scores. Mississippi State rolled up 498 yards of offense with LaDarius Perkins accounting for 319 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns.

The Bulldogs enter the regular season finale at 5-6 and 1-6 in conference play. All six of MSU's losses have come in conference play to teams ranked 1, 2, 3, 12, 13 and 24 in the BCS standings.

The Bulldogs dropped their second straight SEC game last week in Little Rock 44-17 to Arkansas. State managed just 211 yards of offense in that contest.
