Another big official visit weekend for the Black Knights

National Signing Day (Wednesday, February 3) is just around the corner and Army hosted several prospects this past weekend (1/22), some of whom the Black Knights fans are very familiar with, but also with a sprinkle of a couple of new names.

One very familiar name and someone who brings athleticism and versatility, is hard hitting cornerback, Marquis Woodyard who is out of Frederick (Md.) Thomas Johnson High School.

However, the athletic defender was unable to attend this weekend's gathering of prospects due to a conflict with his indoor track schedule.

Woodyard indicated that the reputation of West Point and the opportunity to play football at Army supersedes any official visit that he would take there, and that it would have just been icing on the cake. "I spoke to Coach Brock and Coach Waugh and I told them they are on the top of list of my schools regardless of my visit or not," declares Woodyard.

As it stands, Army remains the leader for Woodyard's talents and he will be making his on Signing Day.

NEW NAMES

A couple of new names that has popped up on the Army recruiting/visit list is 6-foot-4, 270 pound offensive tackle, Austin Gorge and 6-foot-4, 275 defensive tackle, David Vieru.

Gorge picked up his Army offer in late December and his recruiting is being handled by Coach Joe Ross.

Gorge, who is out of Fishers (Ind.) Fishers High School, will be going on an official visit to Army on the February 5th weekend. "Right now I am looking to visit to determine if Army is the fit for me," shares Gorge.

For Vieru, he returned back home Sunday evening from my official from West Point.

Vieru, who is being recruited by Army Offensive Coordinator Ian Shields could project on either side of the ball, but the Black Knights are viewing him initially on defensive.

"Initially I thought it was offense guard, but it appears that they want me at defensive tackle or nose guard," says Vieru, who is out of Gresham (Ore), Centennial High School. I love it…. Can't wait to play defense."

Vieru clearly understand Coach Ellerson's encouragement to prospects to take a couple of days after their official visit to Army to assess their time spent at West Point versus an emotional knee jerk reaction.

"I didn't know what to expect and when I got there, I was astonished by the facilities and the coaches … how the run thing," says Vieru, who continues to be impressed with his East Coast visit.

"The facilities are comparable to U of O (Oregon), if not better. They have an indoor football field, the stadium is nice and the weight room is huge. Everything is new and well kept."

Vieru also bonded with his player host, offensive lineman, Brad Kelly. "He's an awesome guy and he reminded me of myself," shared Vieru, who also enjoyed the time he spent with several of the other recruits visiting, especially kicker Billy Fisher.

The 3.6 GPA student/athlete, who appears to be a lean towards Army stated that he plans to spend some time between now and Wednesday to discuss his recruiting status with parents.

"In my mind, I feel pretty good about my decision, but I want to speak with my parents a little more," Vieru states. "The coaches (Army) are coming in on Wednesday and I should know what I'm doing then."
