NU wows Hegarty

Matt Hegarty has one of those offer lists that makes you scroll down to see all of the schools on his player page. The Rivals250 offensive lineman from Aztec (N.M.) surpassed the 20-offer mark a month ago, and heavyweights like Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas and USC have all extended scholarship offers.

Northwestern doesn't get too many players of Hegarty's pedigree to take unofficial visits, which is why they gladly welcomed him on Friday, March 19, even if NU students (and players) were on spring break. Coach Pat Fitzgerald offered him a scholarship just weeks before, so the 6-foot-5, 265-pounder with the 3.8 GPA decided to stop in Evanston on his way to a Junior Day event the following day at Notre Dame.

The conditions of his visit may not have been ideal, but the Wildcats rolled out the red carpet for Hegarty. After all, how many times does a prospect get to meet the president of a university, let alone one who makes a comment about his highlight film?
