Beamer, Hokies to host talented 2012 recruit

The Hokies are expecting a lot of talented recruits for the second summer camp this weekend. One of those is an emerging rising junior that has Virginia Tech's attention.

"He is one that benefitted from Ronny being out," South County head coach Pete Bendorf said of Vandyke's brother, 2012 linebacker Devin Vandyke. "He played in Ronny's position, the whip linebacker spot last year and did extremely well.

"In the offseason he's put on 15-pounds and is up to 195 now. He's not as tall as Ronny, but his strength has gone off the charts. He's really blossomed. He went to Virginia's one day and was the fastest linebacker there."

Vandyke plans to make a showing at Saturday's summer camp in Blacksburg.

"He's going down to Tech's one day on the 10th and we're looking at JMU or Richmond too," he said. "Virginia Tech is expecting big things out of him. I think depending on how he does; Tech may take a serious look."

Bendorf went further about his 6-foot-1, 195-pounder.

"Devin is the same kind of physical guy as Ronny," he said. "He's runs extremely well and he is going to be our next really good prospect.

"He'll probably be 215 or 220-pound and I see him as an inside linebacker. He's very athletic for that spot as well. He has really good feet and a nose for the football."

Vandyke won't be the only 2012 recruit coming from South County.

"We got a running back who started all 12 games for us last year and had five interceptions at the rover spot," Bendorf said of 2012 tailback Andrew Rector, a 5-foot-9, 175-pounder. "He's our A back and we build the offense around him. He's extremely quick and will make you miss. He's a three-sport athlete too that plays basketball and baseball. He's multi-talented and a great student too with a 3.6 GPA.

"He is a little bit short, but I was talking to one recruiter and he's got the feet and hips. We're expecting great things from him this year."

Rector already camped at Rutgers and as mentioned plans to be in Blacksburg on Saturday.

"A lot of I-AA's are jumping in on him. Old Dominion is very interested."
