Madden making his mark on both sides of the ball

The season may be over for USC, but several recruits are still marching toward state championships.

Mission Viejo (Calif.) linebacker Tre Madden helped keep his team's season alive with a stalwart performance Saturday night. Madden intercepted fellow USC commit Santa Ana (Calif.) quarterback Max Wittek to seal a 42-21 win over Mater Dei in the Pac-5 semifinals.

Madden has been Mission Viejo's ironman, moonlighting at quarterback in addition to his defensive duties. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound senior contributed to all elements of the game in leading his team to Saturday's match with Servite.

Playing both sides of the ball has taken its toll on Madden, but he said he took the task in stride.

"It's tough, but you just have to stay focused," Madden. "I want to do everything to make this team better, though, so if that's what I'm doing, I'll do it."

Madden took home bragging rights over future teammates Wittek and Santa Ana (Calif.) wide receiver Victor Blackwell, but the Mater Dei duo made a few plays, too. Wittek hit Blackwell for a touchdown pass in the first half to give Mater Dei a short-lived lead.

When the fourth quarter came, Madden didn't want to let the connection happen again.

"Earlier in the drive, he hit that drive to Victor and I didn't get enough depth," Madden said. "I just got depth and picked him off. I knew he was going to Victor."

With his senior season closing down, Madden has minimal distractions. Recruitment has come to a standstill, with USC being the only school to consistently talk to Madden.

"Every other week, Joe Berry is coming down," Madden said. "I just had a meeting with him last night and it went good. He told me just to finish out the season strong and that they're looking forward to me coming up there next year."

Madden also said he plans on taking his official visit to USC in early January.

Before leaving the field Friday, Madden gave his Mater Dei counterparts a proper sendoff.

"We all just said, 'See you at USC,'" Madden said.
