Midstate RB discusses Vols, recruiting

With one running back already committed to Tennessee, the Vols are still looking to add another back in the class of 2012. One name that will be one to watch is Murfreesboro tailback I'tavius Mathers.

The 6-feet, 195-pound back had planned on coming to Tennessee's junior day over the weekend but wasn't able to make it, now he's hoping to see the Vols on March 26. He said he's been hearing quite frequently from the Tennessee coaching staff recently.

"It's looking good right now and they just send stuff to the house every other day. I get mail and I talk to a couple of them on facebook, coach Lance Thompson," Mathers said.

After rushing for over 2,600 yards last season, Mathers has become a well-known commodity in the Midstate area. He's almost up to 10 offers and has a lot of big-time programs interested in him, including the Vols.

Mathers said that Vanderbilt, Duke, Virginia, Memphis, Michigan, Minnesota, Ole Miss, Arkansas State and Kentucky have all offered at this point and that Notre Dame, Cincinnati, UCLA, Clemson and North Carolina are recruiting him as well.

Mathers went on an unofficial visit to Vanderbilt last week to check out what the Commodores had to offer.

"Last Tuesday I went to Vandy's junior day. It was pretty good," Mathers said. "We ate and sat in the student section for the (Tennessee basketball) game."

Although he's originally from Columbia, he said he doesn't know a great deal about the Vols and actually grew up cheering on another SEC team.

"I really didn't grow up watching them and I really don't know too much about them," Mathers said. "I grew up watching Auburn; Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown."

When he visits Tennessee later this month, he's hoping to learn more about the Vols, including the shape of the depth chart.

"Just (want to know) about their academics and how many running backs they've offered and how many they plan on picking up," Mathers added.

Mathers feels like he's a good fit for most offenses and that he's a combination of speed and strength.

"I'd say I'm able to cut back and I'm pretty fast. I like to show my speed and show that I'm a power back," Mathers said.
