TideSports Q&A: Justin Thomas

TideSports.com recruiting analyst Greg Ostendorf caught up with Prattville quarterback Justin Thomas after the Lions' scrimmage on Thursday.

The Alabama commitment answered a number of questions, including some asked by TideSports members. He was recently ranked as a 4-star prospect and a member of the Rivals 250 rankings.

Q: How's practice going?
A: It was a slow start, but it started to pick up a little bit. It's the spring, so we've got a lot to work on. We're just trying to take it one step at a time.

Q: Why'd you sit out today?
A: It was just a minor issue. I'm well. They just don't want to risk anything bigger. I'll be back.

Q: Will you be at quarterback when you get back?
A: I plan on playing quarterback.

Q: Is every school recruiting you to play quarterback?
A: Everybody's recruiting me as a quarterback, and I plan on playing there.

Q: Why's that the position you want to play college?
A: I've been playing quarterback basically since I was five years old. I haven't played another position. Every play, I like the ball in my hands, so I plan on staying at quarterback as long as I can.

Q: You consider yourself a dual-threat quarterback. Talk about having the ability to both throw and run.
A: It's a gift. Everybody doesn't have that, so I try to use it to my advantage. If the play breaks down, I try to use my legs to keep it going. I'm not just one-dimensional.

Q: What do you feel are your strongest attributes?
A: I'd have to say the ability to get out of the pocket if something does happen. If I can, I stay in the pocket because I do like to throw. I don't just like to run. I like to throw also.

Q: What do you feel that you need to improve on in order to make the jump to the college level?
A: There's a lot to work on everyday. If you have don't have anything to work on, then you shouldn't be playing. I just work everyday at everything, no matter how good I am at it or not. I still work on it.

Q: How's recruiting going? Which schools are still trying to recruit you?
A: LSU, Florida, Florida State (Mississippi State offered Thomas on Friday.)

Q: Has anybody been by to see you recently?
A: Kentucky and Stanford

Q: Have you talked to any of the Alabama coaches recently?
A: I talked to Kirby Smart last time he came to practice. He was just like keep doing what you're doing, be a leader of the team as a senior, and you've got to take over.

Q: When's the last time you've been to Tuscaloosa?
A: A-Day

Q: How was A-Day?
A: It was good. I saw a lot of good things. They should be pretty good this year.

Q: So with Caleb Gulledge also committed to UA, was playing together the plan all along for you two or did it just happen that way?
A: It just kind of happened that way. We've been playing together since we were young. It should be fun, interesting to play with him.

Q: Are you guys still talking to Justin Shanks about coming to Alabama with you?
A: We don't know what Shanks is going to do. It's got to be his decision, where he feels like his home is at and where he's going to be for four years. We've got to let him make his decision for himself.

Q: Is there a certain player you model yourself after or compare yourself to?
A: People try to say I play like (Michael) Vick, but I just go out there and do my own thing and get the job done when I have to.

Q: Who's the best player you've played against?
A: It had to be one of those guys from Miami Central when we played them.

Q: What are your expectations for the upcoming season?
A: We should win it all. We've got a lot of talent, a lot of people coming back. If we don't win it all, that's going to be a disappointment to everybody.

Q: What are your thoughts on the recent tornado in Tuscaloosa?
A: It's crazy. It can happen anywhere, anytime, so you never know. You've got to live everyday like it's your last. It's a blessing to have a life everyday, so you've got to take advantage of it.

Q: What do you like to do when you're not out on the football field?
A: I like to just chill since I'm doing football 24/7. I like to relax when I can.
