Black turns up the heat at FSU camp

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Competition is what fuels the fire for First Coast (Jacksonville, Fla.) wide receiver Chris Black, who arrived on campus just in time for the start of the morning session of the Jimbo Fisher Football camp on Monday. His morning started off a little rusty, but it wasn't long until he found his comfort zone.

"Yeah man, I dropped a few early passes, one when I went against Chris Bivins that I should have had," Black explained. "I had to get my legs into it and adjust to the heat a little, but I redeemed myself later. I just love this competition out here because this camp probably has the best corners I've seen at a camp."

The matchup everyone was talking about this morning was when Black took on Bivins, who stayed with Black at the start of the route, planted his foot and gained a little space advantage, but dropped the low pass.

"Yes that was a lot of fun. Chris (Bivins) is a very good cornerback from what I saw in going against him," Black said. "He has extremely quick feet, but even better recovery speed for if you gain an advantage. He's the type of player that I see and say 'Yes he's the guy I want to go against it consistently.'"

Black's return to Tallahassee this week is a family affair. His mother and father came along so they all could check out the campus and facilities. In fact, one family member already likes what they were seeing out of the Seminoles.

"We actually just got here this morning, so I jumped right into the camp. We will visit later today with the coaches and have a another personal meeting with FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher, and of course I have to talk with Coach Lawrence Dawsey," Black said. "My mother really likes Coach Dawsey and FSU. As you can see, she is wearing her FSU shirt (Monday). She just feels comfortable with the staff and I feel the same way with my comfort level here."

A big reason for Black's comfort level with FSU is wide receivers coach Lawrence Dawsey. The four-star receiver says he has the strongest relationship with the former Seminole receiver.

"Coach Dawsey been recruiting me from the very beginning. We talk all the time. Most of the time it's not even a topic about football. It's mostly just about life in general," Black said. "I trust him. Our relationship has gotten stronger. He told me when Alabama started to come hard after me, he was going to turn it up even harder to land me. He was right. FSU has really turned it up another notch and that made a very strong impression."

But the coaching staff isn't the only one hot after the no. 7-rated receiver in the country. Former First Coast teammates Derrick Mitchell and Eric Beverly talk about FSU constantly.

"I would say I talk with them the most because they were my teammates and we are always together. It's special there at Florida State because they are people I'm close with," Black explained. "It won't determine my decision, but just something that's a plus. I also talk with Jermaine Thomas, who is close friends with my brother growing up."

After spending time in Tallahassee this week, what's next up for Black?

"I'm sure I will be back here at FSU in the summer. But I know I will be visiting Alabama in July, then Friday Night Lights at the University of Florida as well," he said. "I might take a visit to South Carolina and Auburn but I haven't really planned anything yet. As far as my decision goes, I would like to make my decision to get it done, but I'm just not ready yet. After every visit, my interest goes up for the respective school, so I'm just not ready. I don't have an exact time table yet."
