Long Preparing For His Future
The Houston Cougars have jumped out to a great start to their 2012 recruiting class and have already addressed several needs in the class.
One player that was targeted early was current verbal commit Mac Long from Edna High School. Long was told that Houston was offering a scholarship way back in the summer of 2010 and a relationship was started that has continued to grow.
Long took his time with the recruiting process and along with his family made sure they were comfortable with a decision before making it official after Houston's spring game in April.
Since his verbal commitment Long has remained busy, finishing up his junior year of high school and working hard off the field to prepare himself for his final season with Edna. His offseason workouts include several phases that aim to get him ready for next season and beyond.
"I usually get into the weight room and spend about two hours in there," said the 6-foot-4, 280 pound lineman. "I'll get in there and I'll tear up one body part like arms or legs then I will go out and hit the track for a while. I spend about 30 to 45 minutes out there, sometimes I work on my cardio or work on getting faster and on my explosion and footwork.
Another way that Long has worked to remain in shape has been by participating with Edna's 7 on 7 team this summer. The team made it to the State Tournament held last week in College Station.
"I like my teammates we get along good," said Long at the tournament. "I just like to come out here and run around some, it helps me get in shape."
Since his commitment Long has remained in contact regularly with the Cougar's staff and has begun to make plans with his family to get to Houston as often as possible to see his future teammates in action next season.
"I talk to the coaches pretty regularly," said the Rivals three star prospect. "We are going to get up there as often as we can during the season, we are definitely going to be up there for the UCLA game in week one."
Speaking of future teammates, Long and Edna face off August 26 with future teammate and fellow offensive line commit Blake Herman and Needville. A match-up Long is looking forward to.
"It's going to be good competition I think," he said of the showdown. "Getting to play against a future teammate will be fun. I am an Edna Cowboy first though so I am going to have to give it my all."
