Lawrence taking leadership role
Junior linebacker Cameron Lawrence is coming into his own.
After beginning his career bouncing around at various positions from quarterback, wide receiver and safety, the 6-foot-2, 230-pounder has found a home as Mississippi State's starting outside linebacker.
Lawrence has started all five games leads the Bulldogs defense with 45 tackles on the year including a 14 tackle performance against Auburn in week two.
"I think coming into the season that a lot of people probably thought we had a question mark at our linebacker position," Lawrence said. "There is no doubt in my mind I feel like we're one of the strong points on our defense. I feel like we are playing pretty good football right now."
Lawrence along with middle linebacker Brandon Wilson have taken leadership roles on the defense and are making most of the presnap calls and checks.
"I feel like when Brandon Wilson and I are both out there we're like one heartbeat," Lawrence said. "We're on the same page. If you watch film on us sometimes we're out there making the same checks and same hand gestures."
Co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Geoff Collins is proud of the leadership he is starting to see from his two junior linebackers.
