Impressive Freshman: Demetrious Cox

EAST LANSING - Demetrious Cox has the God-given ability to be an impact player on defense early in his football career at Michigan State.

The biggest challenge facing the high school All-American, however, is learning the Michigan State defense.

"There is a lot to learn back there, so one step here and one step there can get you out of position," said Spartan head coach Mark Dantonio. "But he has great ball skills. It looks like he has good tackling ability from today's practice. But it's too early to tell all of those things. He is definitely a player."

Cox has kept up with installations during the first five practices of training camp. He is ahead of where most true freshmen safeties typically are in terms of understanding the Michigan State defense.

"Just the way he focuses in on things and just his level of play in terms of adjustments and talking and moving," said Dantonio. "He just seems to understand conceptually what we are doing a little bit more than a normal freshman. I think that's a big positive."
