Illinois tight end on Spartan radar

One of the players that the Spartans were able to host on campus this weekend is tight end Ian Bunting of Hinsdale Central High School in Illinois. Bunting already has a Big Ten offer on the table and more could be coming his way once his junior film is evaluated by college coaches. SpartanMag.com spoke with Bunting and got the details on his recruitment.

Bunting, who already has been offered by the Purdue Boilermakers, has helped Hinsdale Central High School to a 3-1 start this fall. This past weekend they dropped a tough game to 2nd ranked Glenbard West High School 28-23. In that game the 6-foot-6, 200-pound Bunting caught 5 passed for 81-yards and scored a touchdown. On the season he has scored 4 touchdowns and racked up close to 400 receiving yards. SpartanMag.com asked Bunting about his visit to Michigan State.

"I really liked Michigan State, especially the atmosphere of the game," he said. "I've talked to coach Roushar mostly and I've gotten some positive feedback. Although I wouldn't say they're among the schools I'm hearing from the most."

So what teams are turning up the heat on his recruitment?

"The schools that are showing the most interest as of now are Purdue, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and Washington," Bunting stated. "I've also heard some from Stanford, Oregon, Cal, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Penn State, but not as much as some of the others."

Bunting does have some connections of the Spartan program that could help Michigan State if they decide to make a strong push for his services.

"I am good friends with the Allen's (Jack Allen's family), so that's a connection to Michigan State," he said. "I also have a friend that goes to Northwestern, but he doesn't play a sport there. I also know a few people that go to Indiana, Wisconsin, and Illinois."

Bunting and Brian Allen are two key players for Hinsdale Central High School. The two of them are hoping to help lead the Red Devils to a West Suburban Silver Conference Championship this fall. The 6-foot-2, 260-pound Allen is already a top priority for the Spartans and it is possible that Bunting will become that as well.

In addition to football, Bunting is also an excellent basketball player. He will be one of the top returning players in the conference this year. At 6-foot-6, he will likely have the opportunity to play basketball in college at some level if he so chooses. As of right now though, Bunting sees his future on the Gridiron.

Being close friend with Brian Allen, it is very likely that Bunting will be back up at Michigan State late this year. SpartanMag.com will continue to follow his recruitment as it unfolds.

SpartanMag.com Take: Bunting is a player that the Michigan State staff is obviously interested in. The main thing with his recruitment is seeing him block. Right now Bunting spends much of his time as a wide receiver due to being a mismatch because of his height and 4.6 speed. Bunting has the frame to carry plenty of more weight and not lose his speed. From Michigan State's perspective it is just a matter of seeing how effective of a blocker he becomes.
