1. Brandon Smith intends to shoot

Once willing to defer to other scorers, Smith looked every bit the confidant senior on Tuesday, scoring 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting in just 24 minutes of play.

Whether it was a mid-range jumper or an open three, Cal's starting point guard showed opposing defenses he intends to keep them honest this season.

2. Richard Soloman seems to have come into his body

Frequently lost in Coach Mike Montgomery's system during his freshman campaign, Soloman was considerably more decisive on Tuesday. And though the Gators - best nickname story ever, by the way - don't exactly qualify as stiff competition, Cal's 6-foot-10 big man showed enough fluidity under the basket to shirk last year's "Captain Coordination" moniker...
