Smith suiting up one last time
Chris Smith remembers the first time he ever caught one of Tyler Russell's passes.
It was not at Mississippi State or even Meridian (Miss.) High School where the due helped the Wildcats win a Class 5A state championship in 2008.
The first time Smith's hands snagged one of Russell's rockets was when the two were playing on opposing middle school teams and Smith picked off Russell.
Since then the connection has been more favorable as they have spent the better part of a decade together torching defenses. But that all comes to an end in just a matter of weeks as Smith and Russell will suit up one final time together.
It will be the last time Smith dons the maroon and white for the Bulldogs since he came in and played right away as a true freshman while Russell redshirted. With the time winding down, Smith is trying to make the most of his last opportunity.
"I realize that each and every day," Smith said. "I try to take a step forward every day and try to get better. It's went by fast."
It may only be a coincidence, but Smith is having the best season of his MSU career with Russell as the full time starter. This fall he has hauled in 46 passes for 557 yards and two touchdowns and is averaging a career-high 12.1 yards per catch as well.
