Amplified leader

AUBURN Nick Marshall generally is a quiet type, a leader by example, a driven young man whose lack of loquacity sometimes is interpreted incorrectly as conceit.

Yet he showed a different face inside the Tigers' huddle Sunday -- his first as the starter.

"He was a lot more vocal and I think his teammates really responded to him. That's natural," coach Gus Malzahn said Sunday night. "It usually happens and it's always good to see how a guy responds once you give him the keys to the car. I really felt like he went out there, he was encouraging, and it was good to see."

Marshall was rated a three-star prospect during his lone season at Garden City (Kan.) Community College in 2012, though his enigmatic background made him difficult to assess. He played cornerback at Georgia in 2011, was dismissed for a violation of team rules and was a revelation on the other side of the ball last fall.
