Williams nearing full-go for Boilers

If everything goes as planned - which has been anything but the case for the last year-plus - Torri Williams is expected be back full-go with the Boilermakers within the next week.

It's been a long road to recovery for the sophomore strong safety, who is being heavily counted on this season in Purdue's rebuild defense. First, Williams suffered a broken leg that sidelined him for most of spring practice in 2005. Then, ligament damage in his foot - discovered after the break had healed - forced him to redshirt, missing the entire season.

Expected to be back in uniform this spring, Williams' return was again derailed, as a back injury - suffered while in the weight room - limited his availability.

As summer workouts began earlier this month, the 6-foot-2, 204-pound Williams was still working out in an only limited capacity. One day last week, he participated in weight lifting, though he worked only on his upper body. Then, during conditioning drills, which included a healthy share of running, crunches and planks, Williams rode a stationary bike on the sidelines.

"I'm hoping to put those problems past me," Williams said, "and go out there and have fun again."
