ACC: Good news for Clemson and UNC?

It's a big week for schools like Clemson and North Carolina as they await potential decisions from some big-time players like Chris Culliver, Ryan Houston, Lamar Milstead and others. Meanwhile, Miami continues its hot start, the Cavaliers look to continue theirs and the Terps get a head start on 2008. It's all here in this week's ACC Blitz where Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Mike Farrell gives you the scoop on every team in the league.

Boston College will be hosting New Jersey quarterback Matt Simms sometime this week as Simms' team camps. Simms is considered a strong lean to Louisville and the Eagles should know better where they stand after his visit…..BC is searching for a pure center and have Georgia prospect T-Bob Hebert on campus this week. Pennsylvania center Greg Gaskins visited last week…..Offensive linemen Nathan Richman from Massachusetts and Kenny Plue from New York were two of the more impressive players at BC's first session….Virginia lineman Andrew Nuss will at BC for a day this week.

Clemson is hoping for some very good news this week as NC State soft commitment Chris Culliver will be in town for an unofficial visit. Culliver blew up on the Clemson campus at the NIKE Camp last month…. The Tigers picked up two commitments this past week. Linebackers Stanley Hunter and Scotty Cooper are both undersized, but each can run and loves to hit. Clemson now has seven in-state commitments….The Tigers appear to be the team to beat for North Carolina cornerback Marcus Gilchrist. Gilchrist is expected to decide within the next couple of weeks.

Duke offered Georgia wide receiver Austin Kelly after a one-day showing at their camp. Kelly wants to see a few more schools before making a decision, but Duke looks in good shape right now….Another recent offer went out to Illinois defensive end Matt Conrath who also has offers from Vanderbilt and Stanford. Conrath could also be an offensive tackle with his 6-foot-7 frame….Duke is also recruiting New Hampshire offensive lineman Mark Spinney as a defensive lineman….Duke has now offered three quarterbacks with the most recent being Teddy Schell from Illinois. He joins New York quarterback David Legree and Ohio's Clay Benton.

Florida State has a couple of big-time visitors heading to Tallahassee soon. The nation's No. 1 defensive tackle, Marvin Austin, is still planning on taking a visit on July 1. And Alabama defensive back Michael McNeil is hoping to swing in for July 6. Both players are key out-of-state prospects for the 'Noles….The biggest position of need for FSU is at offensive line. In addition to commitment Antwane Greenlee, FSU is in very good shape for Madonna guard Emeka Nwankwo, former Georgia commitment Chris Little and can't be counted out for the Pouncey twins despite their recent commitment to Florida.

Georgia Tech is the team to beat for Chamblee, Ga. running back Roddy Jones with a slight lead over Maryland and Clemson. Jones might make a commitment this summer after taking in a few more camps…..Camden County wide receiver Willie White didn't get to make his scheduled visit to Tech camp last weekend, but he will be in camp on July 15. Tech is stressing education and are one of the teams to beat for White, although he has more than 10 offers….Maryland linebacker/tight end Devonte Campbell wants to study Engineering in college which may give Georgia Tech an edge over some others.

Maryland has early offers to two 2008 top prospects. Friendly running back Joshua Haden, the younger brother of Rivals100 athlete Joe Haden, and Forrestville wide receiver Kevin Chapman both have verbal offers from the Terps. Written offers can be sent on Sept. 1….Maryland made the recent cut to 10 teams made by Marvin Austin but the Terps are still considered one of the biggest longshots on his list….Offensive lineman Stephen St. John is the most recent offer by Maryland. The South Carolina native has also been offered by Wake Forest and Marshall.

Miami played host to Marvin Austin, the nation's No. 2 player and No. 1 defensive tackle, this past weekend. Austin was impressed with the area and coaching staff and the 'Canes are expected to make his list of finalists whenever that occurs….Miami's latest commitment comes at a position of need as El Camino (Cali.) El Camino JC wide receiver Kayne Farquharson said he was coming last Tuesday. The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder hopes to be out in December and have three years to play two. He's also an excellent special teams player….Miami seems to be the team to beat right now for New Jersey stud offensive tackle Anthony Davis after his recent visit for camp, although Davis doesn't claim a leader.

North Carolina could be in for a big week as offensive tackle Lamar Milstead from Washington, D.C. is finally expected to take another official visit this weekend with his parents. The Rivals250 member is a heavy lean to the Heels….Running back Ryan Houston was rumored to be making a decision this past weekend but the big back held off. Don't be stunned if he takes care of business within the next couple of weeks however. If that happens, UNC is the team to beat….Huge offensive tackle William Alvarez recently took an unofficial visit to UNC and is very high on the Heels. He hopes to make a decision within a month.

NC State is the first school to offer Garner, N.C. running back Josh Oglesby and it could affect the ultimate decision of Pack commitment and Oglesby teammate Chris Culliver. The Pack wants Oglesby as a safety and are selling the idea of he and Culliver continuing their careers together in Raleigh. Both players will be at Clemson at the end of this week….NC State is having good success at Hertford High School. Last year they signed LaMarcus Bond and they are very much in the mix for Danny Dembry and Tydreke Powell. Dembry recently named NC State as his leader. The Pack is recruiting him as a safety.

Virginia could be the team to beat for local offensive lineman Andrew Nuss, who wants to make a decision in July or early August. Nuss lists UVa, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Georgia and others but rumors are swirling that unless Notre Dame offers, Nuss could be a Hoo. He's currently visiting Boston College….The return of Mike London to the coaching staff has made a big difference in recruiting early on. London, who coaches the defensive line and is the defensive coordinator, is one reason why UVa is in the mix for Marvin Austin and are considered one of the favorites for Nick Jenkins.

Virginia Tech got good news last week when Hampton, Va. quarterback Tyrod Taylor announced he narrowed his list down to two schools with the Hokies battling Florida. Taylor is expected to announce his decision in July or August after he visits the Gators….The Hokies are in good position for Charlottesville tight end Brian Linthicum. Although Linthicum lives within shouting distance of UVa, Virginia Tech has been recruiting him harder and could be the team to beat…..Phoebus offensive tackle Maurice Hampton has blown up recently with six offers. The Hokies need to keep the Phoebus pipeline going and the 6-foot-5, 290-pounder would help. He plans on camping at Maryland and North Carolina and isn't sure about Blacksburg yet.

Wake Forest received a huge commitment last week when Roxboro, N.C. offensive lineman Doug Weaver chose the Demon Deacons over NC State, Virginia, Maryland and Duke. The 6-foot-6, 285-pounder had committed to Duke back during his junior season but had second thoughts after a coaching change. Weaver said he is solid in his commitment now and is one of the biggest gets in the last couple years for Wake.
