Freshman running back C.J. Gable and sophomore kicker David Buehler have become ominously linked.
While Buehler has become an instant star in the Trojans' kicking game, Gable has been an instant highlight reel on kickoff returns. It was only a matter of time until the two met face-to-face this fall.
Sunday night's scrimmage was the time, and Howard Jones Field was the place. With more than a 1,000 Trojan fans watching from the sidelines, Gable and Buehler were about to share one of the night's most exciting plays.
"I saw two blockers coming at me on the return, so I was trying to read where they were going," said Buehler. "Then I was going to wait for him (Gable) to make a move. I wanted him to make a move first so I could get a good angle on him to run him down.
"I did that, but then he stiff armed me when I went to make the tackle, which was pretty frustrating. But I wasn't going to give up on the play."
Having played safety in high school and at Santa Ana Junior College, Buehler considers himself a playmaker in the kicking game. At 6-foot-1, 215-pounds, Buehler will hope to run down more than kick returners this season.
After the scrimmage, the coaching staff informed him that he would start seeing immediate reps as a defensive back.
"I played offense, defense and special teams last year, but here I'm primarily a kicker," said Buehler. "Although, I'm going to start having practice at safety too because Allen Bradford is moving to running back."
