NU Notes: Huskers get ready for option offense
When Nebraska used to run the option under former coaches Tom Osborne and Frank Solich opposing teams always talked about how hard it was to prepare for.
As the Huskers prepare for Division I-AA opponent Nicholls State this week, the current NU players are starting to figure that out why the option is hard to prepare for. The Colonels will attack the Huskers with a hard core triple option that keeps the ball on the ground 93 percent of the time.
Senior Husker linebacker Stewart Bradley said that sophomore Brian Hildebrand has been handling most of the Nicholls State QB duties in practice this week.
Bradley joked that Hildebrand's option offense skills are nowhere near where they need to be.
"Maybe they'll put one of the running backs in to be scout team quarterback," Bradley joked. "The quarterbacks we have are great passers, but I was joking with (Brian) Hildebrand yesterday and he was pitching the ball like six yards before the defense even got to him. I was like 'have you ever run the option before?' He was like 'no, I've only thrown the ball.'
"I was like 'dude, that's not the option.' He's learning, but yesterday wasn't his finest hour."
