Freshman Smith living up to the hype
On a quick John Parker Wilson pass to Keith Brown in the left flats, a Vanderbilt cornerback was in the perfect position to make the play. That is until left tackle Andre Smith, all 333 pounds of him, blocked him into oblivion.
"It was fun. I got a little piece of him," Smith said. "I didn't hit him like I wanted to. I was trying to demolish him, bury him five feet inside his own sidelines. It was a good block but it could have been better."
That sums up Smith's attitude from day one at Alabama, according to his coaches and teammate: doing the job well and doing it better the next time.
"He's a very conscientious young man," said offensive line coach Bob Connelly. "He comes to work every day and asks great questions and he prepares like he's a veteran player."
"He's a great football player. He's a smart kid, he's coachable and he loves the game," said center Antoine Caldwell. "He's everything you could ask for in an offensive lineman."
