X&O Preview of WSU
As a special bonus to Tom Haire's Trojan game previews this year, we are thrilled to report that the USCFootball.com has not completely lost the services of X&O game preview guru Ted Venegas.
Each week, Ted will be providing his thoughts to us on the upcoming USC opponent, and those notes will be a part of each preview. This week: Washington State.
The first interesting thing that you notice about Washington State is that they are not the team they used to be.
Let's start on defense. Under coordinator Rob Akey, the Cougs used to be known for their endless blitz packages, for coming from all angles. Pressure was the key, and they brought up a safety to make pressure.
Those days are gone. Last year, the Cougars barely blitzed SC at all, and they haven't been blitzing much this year either. Why? Well, there's no more Marcus Trufants and Jason Davids out there to gamble with. Washington State is very average in the secondary, especially at corner. That's the big difference between them and Arizona.
