Spartans turning up heat on Rucker?
Since arriving at Michigan State, Coach John L Smith has not had a hard time recruiting wide receiver prospects. The wide open offense allows receivers numerous opportunities catch the ball and get run after catch yards. Michigan State will graduate all three starting wide receivers after the 2006 season. This year the Spartans already have 4-star prospect Mark Dell, however they are looking to add a few more prospect to the mix.
A player that the Spartans are taking a very long look at is Chris Rucker of Detroit Country Day High School. The 5-foot-9, 175-pound wide receiver has something Coach Smith and his staff have stated they need more of, speed. Rucker is the defending State Champion in the 100 Meters and has legitimate 4.4 player.
Rucker is listed as a defensive back in the Rivals.com database, however several schools like him as a wide receiver. The Spartans apparently view him as a slot wide receiver who has the ability to stretch the field and make people miss.
We spoke with Rucker and he updated on his recruitment.
"Michigan State has been in touch a lot the last few weeks. I have spoken with Coach Stoutland several times. I also am hearing from Iowa, Purdue, Wisconsin and Minnesota."
The Hawkeyes, Boilermakers and a host of MAC teams have already offered. According to Rucker he is getting his senior highlight video together and the Spartan staff is anxious to see it.
Rucker is having a very good senior year. He already has 12 touchdowns on the year for 6-1 Country Day Yellowjackets. SpartanMag.com actually named Rucker our Michigan High School Player of the Week after he made a one handed grab in the end zone with under a minute to play to lead County Day over Grand Rapids Catholic Central.
In addition to playing wide receiver on offense, Rucker also plays running back from time to time. He has broken a few long runs and has cracked the 100-yard mark on more than one occasion.
"I get a few carries a game. Usually I go in for a few downs to allow Jonas Gray to get a rest."
Gray is considered on of the top prospect in the Midwest for the class of 2008.
As far as Rucker's recruitment he told us he is not in any hurry to make a decision.
"I am going to wait until late November or early December. By then my season will be over and I can take some visits."
The Spartans have been pretty active about getting Rucker up on campus this fall. He told us that he was in East Lansing for the Notre Dame and Illinois games. Rucker informed us that this weekend he plans on heading over to Eastern Michigan to check out the Bowling Green game.
This coming weekend Spartan fans will have a great chance to see Rucker in action. Country Day High School plays Dewitt High School. The Panthers are 7-0 and are another tough opponent for a Country Day squad that has traveled all over Michigan this fall to play some to the best teams around.
SpartanMag.com will continue to follow the season and recruitment of Rucker. He is definitely one of the few remianing in-state prospects that could earn a Michigan State offer in the near future.
