Things get worse: UM loses, 17-7

After an emotional week in which the Canes attended slain defensive lineman Bryan's Pata's funeral and an on-campus memorial service, UM took the field at Virginia hoping to become bowl eligible.

It didn't happen.

Against one of the ACC's stingiest defenses, the Cane offense managed just 263 yards and Miami lost, 17-7.

"We didn't play with any energy today," coach Larry Coker said. "I was very disappointed in how we played. We didn't tackle well on defense, didn't make plays on offense. We just have to play better."

UM (5-6) now must win its final game on Thanksgiving against top 20 Boston College to qualify for a bowl game.

The last time Miami finished with a losing record: 1997.

The Canes have lost four games in a row.
