Texas Bowl Tidbits

The Web site for the inaugural Texas Bowl boasts that the event will feature the "Largest Holiday Fireworks Show in Texas" following the contest between Kansas State and No. 16 Rutgers on Dec. 28 at the Houston Texans' Reliant Stadium. But it would be difficult convincing K-State coach Ron Prince that the first-ever meeting between the Wildcats and Scarlet Knights won't create a bang as well.

"Our kids are excited and we're excited because you get to play one of the best and that's really why you line up and play this game," Prince said during a Sunday night teleconference following the bowl announcement.

Soon after the post-announcement questions regarding where the Wildcats won't go in late December (the Alamo and Insight Bowls was believed to have a high interest level but went with other teams) died down during the 20-minute interview with Prince and athletics director Tim Weiser, focus instead shifted to the present opportunities for the Wildcats, who finished their regular season 7-5 after winning three of their last four, including a 45-42 upset of then-No. 4 Texas.

The Wildcats get to face Rutgers, 10-2, whose story and remarkable turnaround under Home Depot Coach of the Year Greg Schiano remained in the national spotlight until their final game of the regular season - a 41-39 loss in triple overtime to West Virginia on Saturday.
