Halzle talks about early fight for QB job

You could say Joey Halzle will enter the spring as the favorite to win the starting quarterback job in 2007. But you can also say he'll have a tough time of it with Sam Bradford and Keith Nichol chasing from behind. Editor Carey Murdock caught up with Halzle recently to get his take on the quarterback race that's apparently already starting in the early bowl practices.

Halzle talked about the expected pressures of being in a high-profile quarterback battle at a place like Oklahoma and how he's progressed since arriving in Norman almost a year ago. Can you talk about your approach to bowl practices? Are you looking at this as your chance to put your best step forward to the starting job next year?

Joey Halzle:
We're both just kind of going out there getting reps and getting some of the rust off. That's basically how we're doing it right now.

I'm not pushing too hard because then you'll start making mistakes and getting nervous. I'm just going out there and getting back into the swing of it. I haven't really thrown against our first defense in a long time. I'm just having a good time going out there and playing football again. Have you heard what a big deal quarterback battles can be at OU?

I've heard about that. I've heard from a couple people and I haven't really been a part of it yet. I'm looking forward to it, it should be fun.

I can't really think about that. You'll go crazy trying to please everybody all the time. You just go out there and play football. We all love to do it. That's why we're all here. Just going out there every day working as hard as we can to put yourself in a position to play.
