Vereen is built for speed

On your mark. Ready. Set. Go. If there is one thing Cal fans need to know about Valencia (Calif.) high school RB Shane Vereen, it's his speed. The Bears commit sprinted through opposing defenses all season, on his way to proving why he is regarded as one of the premier ball-carriers in the nation. Now, the next step in Vereen's football career is competition in the Pac-10, where people all over the West Coast will soon see just how fast this student-athlete is.

Vereen woke up Saturday morning and was able to catch the majority of California 's three state championship games over the weekend. While everyone who follows high school sports had their eye on the action in the Home Depot Center that day, the competition on the field held a very different meaning for Vereen.

One of the most soft-spoken and modest student-athletes you will ever run into, Vereen still has business to take care of before he steps on the Cal campus this summer. The 5-foot-9 Vereen also stars as Valencia 's point guard on the basketball court - where the Vikings are off to a 6-3 start to begin the season.
