Sparky: The Sequel
The last time we left off with the Cougars and Sun Devils last month, everything was beginning to break for the Cougars when they met the Arizona State in the fourth conference game of the year. Wazzu had just begun to characterize their season as a potentially special one with a road victory over USC and a home win over ASU was just beginning their struggles in conference play. Not much has changed since then. The Cougars are still hovering near the top of the conference while the Sun Devils are still gravitating toward the bottom.
What also has not changed is the fact that, while Arizona State has lost all of their conference games so far - most of them have been close. That is something the Cougars can certainly relate to from recent past seasons and they know the mindset that typically accompanies it. The Cougars did not hang their heads after each loss and neither have the Sun Devils.
"Practice and our daily work shows no signs of these guys at all going the wrong direction," says Arizona State assistant men's hoop coach Archie Miller. "I don't think anybody walks around here hanging their heads. They show up every single day and do exactly what they're asked to do. They come to work every day."
Eerily similar to last year's and previous year's versions of the Cougars, the Sun Devils' scarcity of wins can be partially traced to their offensive woes.
"The biggest thing for us is our ability to take and make open shots," says Miller.
