Stoops introduces the class of 2007
Bob Stoops class of 2007 provided a roller coaster ride of anticipation and disappointment in the months leading up to national signing day. But on Wednesday afternoon, Stoops stood in front of media members ready to announce a surprising group of signees to the world.
In a span of 12 hours, Stoops recruiting class shot from No. 21 in the Rivals.com national rankings to the No. 14 spot thanks in part to a final week of craziness which saw the Sooners pick up a Nebraska defection, an indecisive hometown hero and a long-awaited decision from a Louisiana lineman.
"I'm just really excited to sign another excellent class here at Oklahoma," said Stoops. "I'm really pleased with our assistant coaches with the way they've worked and hustled to the end. I'm just really excited about the quality of these players."
The other surprising part of Oklahoma's class was the way it continued to grow over the final days. When the Sooners began their quest for the class of 2007, available scholarship numbers were at a premium. What was thought to be 15 available spots quickly turned into 17, then 18 and by the time signing day rolled around, the Sooners found themselves with 21 spots to fill.
Attrition allowed Stoops to bring in an ever-expanding collection of talent.
"Those numbers changed a little bit as we were going through recruiting with Adrian Peterson deciding to declare for the NFL," said Stoops. "We have three guys that are not able to recover from injuries that will be put on medical scholarships because of their inability to overcome their injuries."
