Notebook: Freshmen QB's getting their shot
With junior Blake Field sitting out of Thursday's practice to rest a sore arm, backups Neil Caudle and Steven Ensminger received a lot of action with the second-team.
While none of the backups have stepped forward to take the job behind starting quarterback Brandon Cox, head coach Tommy Tuberville has seen some progress from the two redshirt freshmen.
"They're getting better," said Tuberville. "They're still young, inexperienced, nervous. They're not doing any of the little things right. Their technique is off and when your technique is off in this offense, you're going to struggle with timing and getting the ball off.
"I've been pleased with them. They've worked hard. I think Neil and Steven have competed well. Steven just needs to stay healthy."
Offensive coordinator Al Borges saw both struggle Thursday with interceptions and incompletions.
"I haven't seen separation, but I've seen progress," said Borges. "Today, we just weren't very good. I guess guys were tired, which is no excuse. We've been resting Blake's arm so some of the other guys have gotten reps."
While the backups struggle, Cox continues to be a star of spring drills putting together another strong practice Thursday.
