Wilson has renewed drive to compete
Since arriving in Athens last summer, Tony Wilson has had his ups and downs. Impressive from the start, he ended up redshirting while battling nagging injuries. Then, he started gaining weight, quickly, but now he says everything is under control and he is getting serious about Georgia football.
"I took the first year for granted and gained 40 pounds. I was at 215, but in the offseason I got my mind set right," said the 5-foot-11 Wilson. "Now, I am back down to 193 out there having fun, and I feel good."
That is quite a jump when you consider his prospect database page listed him at 165 pounds as a high school senior. A year ago at this time, he told UGASports that he was up to 187, but, as he noted, by December he was tipping the scales at 215 pounds. That's a 50 pound gain in about 18 months.
"I was out of shape, and I lost a step or two, and I think that is what caused the injury," said Wilson. "I had the two nagging injuries, but I need to tough it out and show the coaches that I am tough enough to fight through and play."
His first injury came a year ago when he broke a bone in the bridge of his foot while running track. Once in Athens, he promptly sustained a shoulder injury and the redshirt writing was on the wall.
