Blanc's time to shine

It's the oldest equation in sports: One player's loss is often another's gain.

That's especially true in spring practice. Teammates compete for playing time and depth-chart position every day. Every drill, every 11-on-11 snap is another chance to make an impression on the coaching staff.

And if a player misses time for an injury, he leaves an open door for others to snap up a few extra chances.

Auburn defensive tackle Mike Blanc is getting ready to reap the benefits of a whole lot of extra chances. The redshirt freshman defensive tackle entered spring practice as a candidate for playing time in 2007.

Injuries to sophomores Sen'Derrick Marks (ankle) and Jermarcus Ricks (knee surgery) have improved Blanc's chances.

Now, as Auburn prepares for its second spring scrimmage on Saturday, Blanc has a lot more playing time coming his way.

"We've got a big day ahead," defensive tackles coach Don Dunn said of Saturday's scrimmage. "We're going to be without two of our guys, so that's a big disappointment.

"But it opens the door for Mike Blanc, who's probably having the best spring of all those guys right now."
