Improved defensive tempo in second practice

In front of a slightly smaller crowd and fewer media members, Arizona State returned to the Kajikawa Practice Facility on Tuesday for its second of 15 allotted spring workouts. While the Sun Devils were still in their "underwear" -- the description given to practicing in helmets and shorts by [db]Dennis Erickson[/db] -- those in attendance saw quite a bit of physical interaction between the players, including one unintended collision between two receivers that provided a brief scare.

Near the end of practice, [db]Tyrice Thompson[/db] and [db]Brandon Smith[/db] came together very hard in what appeared to be a helmet on helmet hit approximately 30 yards downfield at about the right hash mark when [db]Rudy Carpenter[/db]'s pass was thrown perfectly - to both of them. Smith was down on the field and shaking his legs in agony for a few minutes while trainers worked on him before getting up on his feet to his teammates' shouts of encouragement.
