Winds of Change
As the Bearcats took the field to begin the second week of spring practice the theme of the day was change. When we spoke to coach Kelly on Saturday he indicated that there would be more position changes coming and he was correct we counted no less than 5 position changes.
Once again the Bearcats had ideal weather for practice as the sun was shining while they were hard at work on the field.
It is very apparent that the Bearcats are still adjusting to the pace of practice as it appears as though they loose some steam in the middle of practice. When we talked to wide receivers coach Charley Molnar about how his group of receivers were doing so far in camp he indicated that the pace of practice was one thing that he felt the wide receivers were still trying to get used to.
Brian Kelly runs a very up-tempo practice with few breaks. He usually does about 25 5 minute sessions with no rest in between. Rarely does practice run over 2 hours and most of the time the team is off the field in less than 2 hours. Coach Kelly believes you the only way you can get better is to have a lot of reps and that is exactly what the Bearcats need right now as they install a completely new system.
Early on it seemed as though the quarterbacks might have taken a step back as both Dustin Grutza and Craig Carey both had trouble getting in tune with the wide receivers when they were working on routes with no defense.
