Best and Worst of Spring Practice
In the end, the format and divvying of players for Saturday's A-Day scrimmage meant nothing. Cribbage could have been the game of choice and Alabama fans wouldn't have complained. The reason for making their way -- 92,000 strong -- to Tuscaloosa was simple enough: for the first time in more than a decade a championship-caliber coach would be walking the grounds inside Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Thankfully, Nick Saban viewed his team's final practice of spring drills as something more than a personal pep rally. For a team in transition, there's no such thing as a throwaway scrimmage -- not that Saban would ever have any interest in squeezing less than every ounce out of a practice session. Simulating game conditions in front of a crowd larger than what Florida, South Carolina, LSU, Arkansas, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt will attract for home contests during the 2007 season was an added bonus.
