Clemson's coaching staff continues to scour the East Coast in search of two big-time backs. The latest talent to hit the Tiger recruiting board is Virginia Beach (VA) First Colonial athlete Tony Gregory.
"My coach says I'm an I-formation back," Gregory told Tigerillustrated.com in a recent interview. "I don't slow down on my cuts and have some speed on sweeps with great agility."
The 6-foot, 185-pound standout has two offers including one from Virginia Tech and has been garnering plenty of interest.
What are his thoughts on Clemson and the rest of the contenders?
Clemson - "(Running backs) coach (Andre) Powell has been writing me. He sounds like a nice guy. He's trying to convince me to join their program. They are a hard-nosed running team. They use C.J. Spiller really well. I like that and they definitely had a great season."
Maryland - "I like (offensive line) coach (Tom) Brattan. I went up there last week and they have real nice facilities there. They just have some good surroundings and a big campus."
North Carolina State - "They are starting to get a good thing going. Their new coach is getting everything up and going. (Defensive line) coach Keith Willis and head coach Tom O'Brien are good guys and easy to talk to."
Virginia Tech - "They are trying to recover right now. Trying to focus on what they need to and bounce back. I like the way they use their running backs - they build their offense around their key offensive players, usually it's their backs."
Northern Illinois - "They are the other program to have offered me. They have a lot of good running backs and use them real well. Their top back (Garrett Wolfe) had a lot of yards last season. They are coming to my school in May."
Tennessee - "I went up there for camp last year. It's big there - real big. I can see myself there."
Virginia - "They came in (Monday). (Tight ends) coach (Bob) Price stopped by. I went to their game last year against Miami with my fullback. I got to talk to their head coach (Al Groh). It's a great school. They showed me highlight clips of their season and I met with coach Price, too."
Connecticut - "Their coaches tell me about their new facilities and how they want me to visit."
He's planning to visit both the schools that have offered this summer.
"I don't have a timetable right now," the back indicated. "I want to take some official visits to different schools, pinpoint a few favorites and go through the entire recruiting process. I want to wait it out."
Are there any favorites at this point?
"My top four would be Georgia, Virginia Tech, Tennessee and NC State," the standout said. "Virginia Tech and North Carolina State are my co-leaders and on top right now. I'm looking for a school where I fit into their program. I want to win some games and help make the school better."
Gregory has run a 10.9-second 100-meter dash and a 22.7-second 200-meter dash this spring.
He ran for 1,044 yards and nine touchdowns as a junior.
