QB secrecy to ND's, Weis' benefit

Fifteen spring practices, another month of evaluations, one quarterback-or 25 percent of the competition-"eliminated" from the race.


At this rate, the Irish will have a starting quarterback determined by the time the Navy game rolls around.


In a surprise but logical turn of events, Charlie Weis kept three quarterbacks, not two, in competition for the starting spot vacated by the graduation of Brady Quinn.


Jimmy Clausen, Demetrius Jones and Evan Sharpley-that's an alphabetical listing, mind you-made the "cut" ahead of Zach Frazer.


Weis had said he would cut it down to two main competitors for the starting job. But when it came down to making an announcement, there just wasn't enough clear-cut evidence to demote a second quarterback.
