Mitchell: My teammates believe in me

After two days of running sprints and doing situps while his teammates battled it out on the football field, starting quarterback Blake Mitchell returned to practice Monday night following his brief two-day suspension for academic reasons.

"It's great to be back with the guys," Mitchell exclaimed following another lengthy USC workout at the Bluff Road practice fields. It was closed to the public.

Mitchell, a history major on track to graduate in December, contended the rest of the Gamecock football team still has faith in him despite the academic shortcomings that forced him to the sidelines.

"I believe my teammates believe in me," Mitchell said. "I've given them no reason not to. I definitely let them down but they know I've been there at the workouts working hard and busting it. I know they believe in me and respect me."

The perception continues to exist that Mitchell lacks the necessary leadership qualities for a quarterback in Steve Spurrier's system. Mitchell disagrees.
