Monday practice sights and sounds
There was a lot of great action and banter on the Bill Kajikawa Practice Field as Arizona State worked in full pads for the first time this fall camp. Here is a detailed review of some of the highlights on the evening. When he wasn't on the field, Jeremy Payton spent time jawing at the offense from the sidelines. When the offense had a mid-range pass completion after not doing much for a series they celebrated a bit, to which Payton called out, "So what, you caught a pass. You caught a pass." When the offense broke off a big run, Payton said, "So what you had one big run." When Rudy Carpenter hit Mike Jones deep over the middle for a touchdown on Justin Tryon and Troy Nolan, Payton said, "So what, you scored one touchdown." Payton, the player who probably is loudest on defense and a counter-balance of sorts to Keegan Herring on offense, also had some funny comments on Ryan Torain, after Torain's most impressive run (in this writer's opinion) of the day. "He runs upright but he always knows when to dip so he doesn't get hit. One of these times he's not going to dip" and Payton said (paraphrasing) he'd likely be there waiting.
