Thursday Practice Insider: Get that ball
USC intercepted 11 passes last season - third worst in the Pac 10.
During Thursday's practice, the Trojans picked off at least three, and coach Pete Carroll wants more.
"For us to improve, we have to get the ball more than we did last year," Carroll said of a defense that held opponents to a conference-best 15.2 points per game. "We were very consistent, and we finished particularly well.
That's real important, but we have always prided ourselves on the fact that we get the football away from our opponents, and that did not happen."
Thursday, freshman linebacker Malcolm Smith had a Pick-6 off [db]John David Booty[/db]; sophomore cornerback Shareece Wright snagged a pass that Mark Sanchez had telegraphed for Stanley Havili; and freshman linebacker Chris Galippo intercepted Aaron Corp.
"The guys who are getting it done, we have to play more," Carroll said.
