Powell hoping to take on more duties in 2008

Rome (GA) Darlington Prep kicker/punter Shawn Powell committed to Florida State last February as part of the 2007 recruiting class but the two sides agreed that he would 'gray-shirt' this fall and enroll in school in January. As a result, his eligibility clock for playing college football would not start until 2008.

So what is Powell doing with his time between high school graduation and when he officially becomes a member of the FSU football team? He is spending his mornings working at a produce company near his home and his afternoons working on the football field to prepare for when he arrives in Tallahassee.

"I get off work around 1:45 and then I go to Darlington (Prep) and work out," Powell said. "I work out until about 3:00 or so and then I wait for football practice to start because I am helping to coach the special teams there. My kicking coach, who coached me at Darlington, he still comes and works with me while I am working with those guys as well."

For nearly two months over the summer, Powell got a short taste of what college life will be like next year.

"I was down from June 17 until August 4," Powell said. "I took classes, three classes to get seven hours out of the way. I worked out with the team every morning and I ran with the team during the voluntary workouts. Basically I did everything with the team."
