Fall camp: Week 3 Recap

With Fall camp concluded and the Alabama football team eight days away from opening the 2007 season, preparations for the Western Carolina Catamounts are nearly at hand. has staffed every practice since camp opened Aug. 2, keeping subscribers informed with all the news of the preseason. A quick summary of the past week, plus a few notes not published heretofore:

*** DB Simeon Castille was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge early Sunday morning. According to police, no alcohol was involved, and coach Nick Saban said discipline will be handled internally. Castille's arraignment is scheduled for Monday.

*** Alabama welcomed more than 20 walk-ons to the program Wednesday, the day fall classes began at the Capstone. Among them was former Mississippi State receiver Jonathan Lowe, who transferred to Alabama before the 2006 season and was impressive in spring drills.

*** None this week. With fall camp over and classes now in session, it appears position experiments are over. The last player to make a switch was Javier Arenas, who moved from cornerback to safety more than a week ago.

*** K Jamie Christensen strained a quadriceps muscle, missing last Saturday's scrimmage and subsequent practices. Coach Nick Saban said the injury is not a serious one. If Christensen does not play against Western Carolina, it will be the third consecutive season opener he has missed.

*** OL Cody Davis has been in a black non-contact jersey with a shoulder injury since Saturday's scrimmage.

*** FB Baron Huber worked in a black non-contact jersey Thursday. Saban said Huber has a thigh bruise and is day to day.

*** DL Brian Motley has been in a black non-contact jersey this week with a broken bone in his hand, but returned to individual drills Wednesday with a cast.

*** Saban said Thursday that K Leigh Tiffin was leading the competition at that position before incumbent starter Jamie Christensen went down with a muscle strain, but added that the competition for the kicking job is not over. Given the season opener is just more than a week away, Christensen's opportunity to return to practice and overtake Tiffin before the season opener seems very unlikely.

*** Freshman DL Nick Gentry joined individual drills in a black non-contact jersey Wednesday along with the new walk-ons. Gentry was part of the Tide's incoming freshman class but did not report for Fall camp on Aug. 2 due to a shoulder injury.

*** One of the most physically impressive walk-ons to join the team on Wednesday was noseguard xxx Garnier. The xxx from xxx is has a massive upper body and is lean through the waist area.

"I don't think it's normal to be great. I think it's special. The human condition is to be average and to survive." - Nick Saban.
